Painting with Light Tests

A long-exposure photo I took of an iPod-Touch playing a video file.

I was inspired last spring by this rather incredible video:

In the video they use iPads which play movie files of 3d objects in cross-section. As the movie file plays, the virtual camera moves through the 3d object. So as a person pulls the iPad through the air, they ‘extrude’ a 3d object in space with light while a DSLR captures this with a long exposure photo.

So I tried a few rather pathetic tests of my own one day this summer. I just used solids in After Effects to create these, but when I have some more time in the future I will make some 3D models and attempt more interesting things.

Until then, here’s what I came up with. I’ve haven’t color corrected any of these.
